I have gone back and forth between multiple diaper brands during my 8+ years as a parent, so far.
When my first was little I was obsessed with Honest Company diapers, mostly because the designs were just so freaking cute and with only one baby I could afford to spend the extra bucks. Then with my twins, I switched to Seventh Generation Diapers before just going with the Target store brand because diapering twins gets expensive quickly.
Now I have a fourth baby, and we are back to Honest Diapers because the others we tried kept leaving her rashy.
It just goes to show that which diapers are right for you really change from baby to baby (and your budget!). So let’s break down the most important aspects of both of these diaper brands to help you choose which one makes the most sense for you.

Do affordable eco-friendly diapers exist?
The answer is a little complicated, but essentially there are really NO disposable diapers that are affordable, easy to get, and actually 100% eco-friendly.
Right now fully compostable diapers do not exist, and while cloth diapers might lead to less landfill waste, they still require both your energy and the energy used from washing them. So there isn’t really an option that doesn’t have a downside when it comes to the environment.
Knowing that there isn’t a purely eco-friendly diaper brand out there, where do Seventh Generation and Honest diapers stack up?
About Seventh Generation Diapers: Who makes Seventh Generation diapers?
Seventh Generation as a company prides itself on taking into account more than just its bottom line. They get their name because the founder wanted to ensure they were operating in a way that would benefit the next seven generations after them.
They’re now a huge corporation available for purchase at places like Target and Amazon with products ranging from dish detergent to baby diapers.
With all of this massive growth over the last few years, are they STILL the paragon of virtue they claim to be?
While they may be a bit more eco-friendly than other mainstream brands, they do partake in a bit of greenwashing, and their diapers are not biodegradable. Not to mention a lot of their other products come in plastic containers.
So if being eco-conscious is your main priority, they are not the best brand to buy, though you could do worse perhaps.
About Honest Company Diapers
Honest Company was created by Jessica Alba. She says “I created The Honest Company because you shouldn’t have to choose between what works and what’s good for you.” While most people probably learned about Honest Company through their diapers, they are now a much bigger brand with products ranging from makeup to shampoo and even some household items like disinfecting spray.
Alba says that Honest Company products are “good for you,” but are they? This article breaks down some of the controversies Honest Company has become wrapped up in including some lawsuits for misleading marketing and greenwashing.
However, there is no disputing that while Honest Company is not perfect, their diapers ARE more eco-friendly and natural than your more typical brands like Pampers or Huggies. It feels like we shouldn’t let perfect be the enemy of the good in this case since as we established there are no 100% eco-friendly diapering options out there. So you have to decide if you think Honest Company is eco-friendly enough to warrant the price tag.

Both companies are more eco-friendly and “natural” than a lot of brands on the market. Neither fully live up to the standard they themselves hope to achieve, and do engage in greenwashing their products.
